Cosmetic Dentistry

If you’ve been finding that your smile lacks the kind of brightness and quality that you really want, you’ve probably come across the field of cosmetic dentistry in your search for perfection.  Well what is cosmetic dentistry?  The answer is pretty simple.  It’s a discreet mix of cosmetic surgery and dentistry, specifically developed to address the concerns of people with stained or damaged teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry is popular now because of increased public awareness.  More and more celebrities and TV personalities are sporting those perfect pearly whites.  As people just like you begin having their teeth done, the idea of perfect teeth is quickly becoming the norm.  There’s a whole slew of whitening kits available for private use in the home, but they’re not as effective as getting cosmetic dentistry.  Furthermore, there’s nothing you can buy over the counter that can fix a chipped or widely spaced tooth.  Cosmetic dentistry is safe, effective, and painless.  For people who want results, it’s the only real answer.

Veneers- A porcelain veneer is a technical term for what is really a “finger nail” for a tooth. If we want to change the shape or colour of a tooth, or group of teeth, we can do so dramatically with this minimally invasive procedure. When working on groups of teeth we can re-model the patients entire smile. Teeth that are stained, for whatever reason, antibiotics and fluoride are the most common, can be made to look uniform and natural again.

Tooth jewellery- Skyce from Vivadent are jewels, which are specially designed for teeth. Skyce comes in two different sizes and two colours "crystal” and "sapphire blue”.

Teeth Whitening - As we age our teeth naturally lose their white color.  Habits like drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes can make things worse by adding stains to the mix.  White teeth can be regained through a process known as whitening.

When it comes to whitening there are several different levels of the procedure.  Surface whiteners focus on eliminating the stains accumulated from coffee and tobacco products.  They are commonly found in chewing gums and toothpastes.  More intensive bleaching agents can be used in your cosmetic dentist’s office.  These are many times more powerful than surface whiteners and actually penetrate the tooth to give it a wholesome new look.

Cosmetic fillings : A large number of people had amalgam fillings (silver) or gold filling restorations in the past. Some amalgam fillings contained mercury. Metal fillings were effective, but very conspicuous and tended to blacken in color over time.

Tooth-colored fillings or composite resin dental fillings were created as an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings.

Composite tooth colored fillings are made of a resin filled with microscopic porcelain particles. The strength of current composites is similar to the strength of silver mercury fillings. The advantage of a composite filling is that it is bonded to the tooth. Research has shown that a well-sealed composite filling can restore the strength of a decayed tooth almost to the level of an unfilled tooth.

A well-sealed composite filling can last as long as a silver mercury filling. A composite restoration can take twice as long to place as a silver mercury filling, so they are usually more costly in the short run. However, they may also prevent a tooth from fracturing, which saves time and money in the long run
